Our Food Faves

New Plymouth is spoilt for choice when dining out, so deciding where to eat can be difficult, especially if you’re only visiting for a few nights. The State Hotel team have put together their favourite nearby dining spots for you to explore during your next stay.

Shining Peak Brewing

Known for its upbeat atmosphere and welcoming staff, Shining Peak Brewing is well worth a visit. Shining Peak’s craft beers are brewed on-site, with a wide range on tap to spend your evening sampling. Their award-winning head chef makes sure to satiate your hunger with a menu offering modern “pub classics”. Whether it’s a beef and brie burger, fish of the day with quinoa and soy caviar, or one of their famous beer ice creams, it will hit the spot. On a sunny day, be sure to grab a seat in their courtyard!

Social Kitchen

A local favourite is Social Kitchen, located in New Plymouth’s former Salvation Army Citadel. Social Kitchen offers an intimate vibe for your evening with, as the name suggests, an emphasis on sharing plates. If you need inspiration on what to order, we suggest the slow-cooked lamb shoulder or perhaps the flaming halloumi for a theatrical dining experience. It must be said, however, you could solely order from the side menu and still be satisfied!

India Today

Previous hot spot Koi has now teamed up with India Today to create a modern Indian dining experience with a Malaysian twist, although the excellent hospitality remains. The elegant décor and relaxing ambience make it a great place to indulge for an evening. They offer an array of must-try cocktails and are renowned for their butter chicken dish, a favourite of Allie’s at the State Hotel!

Toret Cucina Italiana

If you fancy a short, scenic drive to a neighbouring town for a bite to eat, book a table at Toret Cucina Italiana. Toret offers an authentic Italian menu with some New Zealand influence, using local and seasonal ingredients. The changing menu means you will always have something new, and undoubtedly delicious, to try. With attentive service and an impressive wine selection, Toret is an excellent restaurant for any occasion.

Black Sands Pizzeria and Bistro

Head to Black Sands Pizzeria in Ōakura for authentic Napoli pizza as you watch the sunset over the beautiful black sand beach. Black Sands is an AVPN-certified pizzeria and is one of only three certified establishments in New Zealand. There is plenty to choose from, plus an inventive bistro menu, keeping everyone at the table happy! Luke at the State Hotel recommends the “751”, an incredible blue cheese and pancetta pizza.

We are lucky to have so many fantastic dining spots in New Plymouth, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do! For your trip to Taranaki, we would love to welcome you to the State Hotel, the perfect base to explore the region. For the best deals, remember to book direct to save.
