Common Questions

Check-in is generally from 2pm unless otherwise pre-arranged. You if you arrive earlier, we'll happily hold your luggage until check-in time. Check-out time is 10am.
If you book directly, you'll have the option of selecting a 12pm check-in and check-out during the booking process, if required. We offer self check-in/out for late arrivals and early departures.

Hotel entry is located at 162 Devon Street East and is accessed using your room keycard. There is no lift access and all rooms are located on the first floor. Please call us in advance if you need assistance with your bags. Once you've booked, you'll receive an email a few days before your arrival detailing the full arrival process.

We accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Cash as forms of payment. Payment date will differ depending on which rate you book. All credit card payments will incur a 2.5% transaction fee. If you wish to avoid this fee, please contact us to arrange an alternative. If paying by cash, a security bond of $200/night is required.

Sorry, the State Hotel is unsuitable for children.

We are a business friendly hotel and we offer corporate rates to those staying regularly for work. We partner with all major corporate travel agents. Have a look at our corporate page for more details.

We have live-in managers who are always available to help. Reception itself is unattended at times, but assistance is just a phone call away - available 24/7. We have taken care to make the arrival and departure process quick and easy with minimal fuss.

Two great galleries within 50m of the hotel. Jane’s Gallery has a new resident artist every month and Gover St Gallery has a huge selection of local art. Come prepared with a big suitcase!

Juno Gin

Visit Taranaki’s own boutique distillery and experience a goddess amongst gins. Book a full distillery tour and you’ll enjoy a welcome cocktail, canapés and taste an array of gins.

Wander through the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Len Lye Centre. Exhibitions are forever changing so check out the website for the latest schedule. Admission $15pp.

Hot tip: Grab a bite to eat at Monica’s Eatery while you’re there.

Te Rewa Bridge

Grab a selfie at this iconic New Plymouth landmark. The bridge perfectly frames Mt Taranaki on a clear day.

Hot tip: Hire a bike from the Cycle Inn and get there via the beautiful coastal walkway. Allow 30 mins each way from the hotel.

Pukekura Park

The jewel in New Plymouths crown, Pukekura Park is just 10 minutes walk from the hotel and is home to the famous Bowl of Brooklands.

Hot tip: The park comes alive every summer for the Festival of Lights.

Pouakai Tarns

This beautiful day walk will take you through serene native bush up to the Tarns via Pouakai Hut. All the details on this walk on the Doc website.

Hot tip: Early bird catches the worm! You’ll usually have the best chance of snapping this iconic photo early in the morning.
