Discover New Plymouth: The Instagram Edition

New Plymouth is a picturesque coastal town nestled on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island and home to some spectacular sights. To be the envy of your Instagram followers, get your camera ready and prepare to explore with our guide to the most scenic spots in our corner of the world.

Coastal Walkway

For a mix of urban and coastal vibes, stroll along the Coastal Walkway, stretching almost the entire length of New Plymouth. Our iconic black sand shoreline will be sure to set you apart from the other beach posts on social media! Try to capture an action shot of surfers riding the waves, and keep an eye out for the street art along the way, from larger-than-life sculptures to colourful murals.

Paritutu Rock

Take a short but somewhat vertical climb up Paritutu Rock at the edge of the CBD. From the top, you will have 360-degree views of the city, rugged coastline, and the volcanic Sugarloaf islands, making an awesome addition to your feed.

Lake Mangamahoe

A short drive from New Plymouth town centre is Lake Mangamahoe, a tranquil spot offering an easy way to see Mt Taranaki with numerous vantage points. The lake is surrounded by forest, creating a remarkable foreground for one of many great photos you can take here. If you’re lucky enough to visit with clear skies, you may see the summit of Mt Taranaki reflected in the lake.

Pouakai Tarns

Finally, saving perhaps the best until last, is one of the most beautiful views of Mt Taranaki. Head up to the Pouakai Tarns, an approximate 2.5-hour walk via stairs and boardwalks, but we assure you that every step is worth it. On a calm day, Mt Taranaki mirrors perfectly in the water, and if you reach the tarns at sunrise or sunset, the gorgeous golden and pink hues will make for one of the most jaw-dropping photos you’ll ever take!

Whether you’re an avid photographer or looking to step up your Instagram game, let New Plymouth be the backdrop of your next adventure. Organise your trip to Taranaki today and secure a comfy, groovy room at the State Hotel.
