Welcome to New Plymouth, where nature is just a stone’s throw away from the inner city. If you’re looking to stretch your legs during your next visit, here are five of the best walks in New Plymouth, suitable for all levels of fitness and interest.
Coastal Walkway
First up is the iconic Coastal Walkway. This award-winning path hugs the coastline and stretches just over 12 kilometres. Perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride, the walkway takes you past several of New Plymouth’s landmarks, including the Wind Wand sculpture and Te Rewa Rewa Bridge.
Pukekura Park
Pukekura Park is a 52-hectare park in the heart of New Plymouth, making it hard to believe you’re only minutes away from the city centre. Wander through the park’s trails and discover lakes, picturesque bridges, and even a Torii gate gifted from Japan. Depending on what time of year you’re visiting, you might catch a live performance at the Bowl of Brooklands, a unique outdoor amphitheatre.
Te Henui Walkway
For a tranquil riverside amble, head to the Te Henui Walkway. This track follows the Te Henui Stream, winding through native bush and past historical pā sites. This track is a favourite among locals, as multiple entry points along the walkway make it easily accessible for those throughout the suburbs.
Goblin Forest Track
Venture further afield to Egmont National Park, and you’ll find the enchanting Goblin Forest Track. This walk will take you through twisted, moss-covered trees, making you feel like you’re taking an unexpected journey to find a ring. The track will soon lead you to Dawson Falls, an 18-meter-high waterfall which provides a great photo opportunity. If you want to linger amongst the trees for a little longer, take the track to Wilkies Pools. Here you will discover plunge pools with crystal clear water – although icy cold, it can be refreshing in the summer months!
Pukeiti Gardens
Last but not least, explore the vibrant Pukeiti Gardens. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Taranaki, Pukeiti is a beautiful botanical garden that also offers a variety of walking trails through lush rainforests. The gardens are incredible in spring and early summer when the rhododendrons are in full bloom – Pukeiti has one of the world’s largest collections, so it’s unlikely you’ll find another place like it! Take your time to wander the trails and enjoy the peaceful, colourful surroundings. There is also a café onsite, which is a great place to refuel with a bite to eat.
So, lace up your shoes, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the diverse trails Taranaki has to offer.
